From time to time Jesus, His Mother and His saints appear on earth to provide the Faithful with a particular message. Many Catholics are familiar with St Catherine Laboure and the Miraculous Medal, St Bernadette and Lourdes, Melanie and Maximin at La Salette, and Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta at Fatima. Wherever Heaven appears, Hell sends false apparitions to sow doubt. Thus we have Garabandal, Bayside, Medjugorje, the Little Pebble, Maria Valtorta, the Marian Movement of Priests and the Magnificat Meal Movement.
False apparitions are Satan's temptation for the devout. Each occasion a priest repels faithful Catholics through a display of open defiance to the laws of the Church another group of Catholics is attracted to the siren call to prayer and fasting at an apparition site. Satan does not go around telling people to sin. No one falls for that one. What he does is push prayer and sacrifice. Devout Catholics find it hard to resist such a call. But mixed with the good stuff, Satan inserts subtle evils. Satan is happy to accept a few rosaries if he can gain a soul. Fortunately there is a way for Catholics to tell if an apparition is genuine. The Church places the local bishop in charge of the decision. If you obey the bishop, you cannot go wrong. Can the Bishop Shut Down a Shrine? Code of Canon Law - IntraText Code of Canon Law - IntraText The argument used by followers of unapproved apparitions is that if the bishop is a 'bad' bishop, you don't need to obey him. This argument is obviously a false 'GET OUT OF JAIL FREE' card. It means that all you have to do is declare a bishop to be 'bad' and you don't have to obey his authority. It matters nothing, for example, if a pope is evil. What he defines infallibly remains infallible. The most blatant disobedience takes place at Medjugorje, in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Two bishops have said that there is nothing supernatural happening. So has the Bishops' Conference of the former Yugoslavia. Medjugorje Heresies, Message, Apparition There are many reasons why Medjugorje has not been approved. 1 The local bishop There is no doubt about the position of the local bishop. Yes, he does, but the Church does make the bishop, not the Pope, the authority on apparitions. Where there is gross disobedience, a bishop can submit the case to the Pope, in order that the Pope's authority will overcome the influence of Satan. 2 The Lies of the 'Visionaries' Lying has become a way of life for those who are supposed to be seeing Our Blessed Mother. There are many other problems with Medjugorje. Examples are the huge money-making industry which has been established; visionaries have become wealthy, without ever having a job; they have established families, but there are criticism of the size of those families - some would expect that those who are seeing the Blessed Virgin would be likely to have more than a couple of children. Medjugorje people have gained a reputation for anger, should anyone question their apparition. Even violence: Generally well researched, here are a few nuggets from Jones' book: Bishop Peric, who was Bishop of Medjugorje at the time, was actually man-handled--his pectoral cross ripped off--by devotees of the "Gospa" of Medjugorje, who whisked him away to a chapel run by the Franciscans, and he actually had to be rescued by the Mayor of Mostar with U.N. troops in tow! [pg. xvii, from the introduction] Jones provides a nice quote regarding those who are constantly seeking a "high"-- a fix-- from ever-changing "mystical" phenomena, especially those in the charismatic movement, who the devotees of Medjugorje seem to be in abundance: "Either one grows into a mature faith--i.e. one not based on signs and wonders--or one looks for signs and wonders in ever-increadsing doess in order to maintain the spiritual high one remembers from the past." [pg. 37] Divine Intervention And finally, there appears to be much disobedience among the Franciscans there, who refuse to obey the Pope's order to hand over parishes and chapels to the bishops. And a few nuns made pregnant by priests (Fr Tomislav Vlasic fathered a son with Sister Rufina; Fr Ivica Vego also managed to get a nun pregnant). Any of the above reasons should be enough to stop faithful Catholics from getting involved. Those who go there in recognition that Our Lady is appearing there offend God, who also does not favour priests who arrive and celebrate sacraments without permission from the bishop. The amount of evil in Medjugorje is staggering. Satan has been brilliantly successful, and one wonders how many good Catholics have been dragged down to Hell as a result.
